Changes coming to historic venue

I was glad I got to play a course that has hosted 15 Australian Opens, even though it won't be around in its current state much longer. Plans for major changes by Gil Hanse have been approved by the club, a vote that split the membership in two.
It is much needed, though, as the current 6,344-meter layout only really has one truly memorable hole - the last, an epic par 4 bending left around a grove of trees to an elevated green, featuring a great view of the stately clubhouse in back. The first hole is super quirky - a nearly drivable par 4 with bunkers everywhere. Any time you walk in the footsteps of legends - Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Gary Player have won here - it's a privilege to play a "Royal".
