Waverley Golf Club

Waverley is a marvellous layout that has fallen into disrepair.
Although the greens (& surprisingly the bunkers) were generally in good nick the fairways did not appear to have been watered & grass coverage was sparse.Worse still many holes had tees closed off with a number of holes being reduced to pointless par threes.

A lovely course with undulating fairways and excellent condition.
Very quiet on a Friday morning and made my way around in under 3 hours.

The old Waverley Private GC is now semi public. It offers a challenging golf experience in non ideal conditions.

Sadly despite the lockdown, where most of the courses I have played have been rejuvenated from the lack of patronage, Waverley’s condition looked like it had endured a busy and dry summer. Greens had a few burnt spots and the fairways were rock hard and thin on grass in some places. Of course there are the powerlines that (auto mulligan local rule if you hit one) some of the holes run under.

Still it’s very difficult to shoot a good score here as the fairways are super tight and surrounded by tall gum trees. If you’re gonna miss a hole, miss big as the holes are generally tightly packed together. Indeed the par 5 7th hole is much easier to Play down the 8th fairway. Many of the holes border OOB as well. The final hole is probably the toughest of the lot, a long dog leg right with an uphill approach to a bunker guarded green, the clubhouse close on the right.

It seemed like a fun club membership, there is a large practice range (a long way from club house) small putting green and warm up nets. There is also a lawn bowls club if you are ready to make that final transition out of golf.

Had a great round of golf, the fairways are quite narrow in placed which makes for a really testing game of golf. The course conditions are superb and will definitely play again. Greens are quick.
